TN: 2001 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain

  • 2001 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain - USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain (6/15/2009)
Decanted 3+ hours. A very classic cabernet, and not in the best of ways.
Dark and dense, the nose showed absolutely nothing save for a slight note of cassis, very ungiving indeed.
The palate had some ‘iron grip old Cali Cab’ stylings. Realizing these need decades and not just years, we continued on anywho. All correct black fruits of currant and blackberries with some hints of leather, tar, & coffee beans. A tiny note of green pepper with some black olive detracted. The tannins clobber and the clunky feel never really dissipates. The mouth feel is mid weight and the finish admirable.
A very correct wine if one wants to just drink correct wines. I don’t. I want show and schnizzle, so the implied flaw in this case may be a byproduct of the taster and not the wine. My score may not be fair, but a 89 seems about right to me tonight. (89 pts.)
