2001 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Romanée St. Vivant- France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru (10/10/2014)
Yeah, I know. I’m giving this the dreaded 94 rating that no one trusts. It’s the catch-all for a really great wine that’s just a tiny bit below incredible. But that’s this bottle.
Cork soaked through so I was a little worried. A little acetone and funk, blew off pretty quickly. Didn’t have a decanter so took a little bit off the top and left it alone for 1/2 hour. Initially not giving much. Tasty juice but no ‘wow’ moment. This came about 30-45 minutes later, the 2nd half of the bottle. Then it came alive. Persistence, length, something ‘electric’ in there. Great aromatics, could smell the sour cherries across the table. The tension between acid and fruit, it’s there. Both delicious and interesting, with some real punch, though an RSV punch (not a Richebourg punch). Quality bottle of Burgundy from a very tasty vintage. (94 pts.)
agree with your note, although I have tasted it only once 10 y ago, but the 2000 isn´t that much different, maybe slightly softer.
Suchots and Echezeaux 01 is also fine now, although I still prefer it with more age on it.
BTW: the picture is certainly with bottles from the 80ies …
I have a double mag of the 2002 in the cellar, purchased in 2008 from HDH for $1,100. Think that’s gonna need until maybe the 2030s or 2040s. Think that may be the last bottle I drink before getting in the pine box.
the library versions of old vintages sold at a reasonable price long ago were not great wines–recorked or tired, I am not sure–but soured me on their RSV.
I have tried this twice in 3 years and rate hit a tad higher than you but curiously my bottles had different label in Australia …
dont know if i have a photograph
As I stated above the two bottles (cellar-tracker) are much older … 80ies or earlier …
I think there are at least four different labels between 1990 and now:
2007 and later: straight upper edge, Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux with vintage
2000-2006: straight upper edge, Domaine Robert Arnoux (with Pascal Lachaux below), vintage on separate neck label
1996-1999: round upper edge, panther with the flag in a round crest, “Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux” in red, vintage in the center
(1989?)/1990-1995: round upper edge, panther with the flag in a shield, “Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux” in black, vintage left and right,
older (-1988?): blue shield with panther
Later releases from the 60ies to 80ies can have labels from the 90ies …
can anybody verify if 1989 Arnoux (no matter what Cru) has the 1988-type label … or the 1990-1995 type … ?
I cannot remember having seen or tasted one …
I have never tasted any Arnoux older than 1997, unfortnately, but the 2001 Chaumes is in a great state now. Different label than in the links above (but I cannot open the 4th one → Referral Denied)
