2001 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays- France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru (4/2/2016)
Decanted for one hour. Medium ruby with lighter rim. Insistent, fully realized nose of anise, red berry, musk, violets, gunmetal, and dark earth from the get-go. Despite the decant the palate was gruff and unyielding at first, and it was not until hour 3 that the wine released its layers of velvety mulberry and red raspberry fruit clothed in understated iron and earth. Displayed ample acidity and firm tannins leading to a long, elegant, yet muscular finish of beef blood, iron filings, and dark cherry fruit. Impressive, serious wine which requires a long decant or more time in the cellar. (92 pts.)
Thanks Doug, I have one left and planning on opening it in 2021 or 22 for its 20th anni depending on how you count 20yrs from vintage . I’ve loved my other three but will roll the dice a little on this one.
Based on this showing, that’s probably not a bad idea. I may do the same with my remaining bottle. Not having had much experience with 2001 red burgs, it is hard to say how the vintage will evolve, but since the 2000’s are still drinking nicely I would think that we are still early.
I’m in the one bottle left club as well. This wine for me is sort of a stealth wine. It starts out as a pleasant, almost undistinguished drink, and then just grows and grows on you the longer the bottle is open.
It certainly morphed quite a bit through the evening (in a favorable direction). Hopefully the last bottle will be the best.
I read a bit about the estate. They tend to rack early, include stems, use a less aggressive oak program. Don’t know what that means necessarily but I like the results.
I have a few more left and a couple of mags.
My last bottle was opened was in 2010 and I liked it better than the 2002 at that dinner when they were poured side by side. 2001 is an acid lovers vintage
