TN: 2001 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  • 2001 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (8/31/2009)
Stellar. Soaring nose, raspberry, provencale herbs and a hint of white pepper. The palate, oh the palate, spicy, pomegranate, bit of pine needle, nice Grenache elements, a little bit of bitterness towards the back end but more in a bittersweet way than a forced way. This works really well. Still quite young but awfully pleasurable. (93 pts.)

The 2001 Clos des Papes was one of my contribution to Grenachefest last Friday. I didn’t like it, even when I poured a separate glass after dinner to leisurely sip. Muted fruit, overly acidic and obtrusive alcohol. A definite disappointment, given how much I enjoyed the 2000 the previous year.

I was one of the few to really love it inversely. For me it was more in line with what eric wrote

Funny. I have had two bottles of 2000 Clos des Papes recently and didn’t love either. This 2001 was right in my wheelhouse though and exactly what I expected.
