TN: 2001 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe

2001 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe

I own a case of these and decided to open one last nite. Decanted for 5 hours. Even after the decant stiil tight in the glass but after 30 mintes and warming up just fantastic. Dark cherry fruit, tar… everything you want in a Barolo. Penetrating aromatics with a lingering finish. Great balance for such a young wine

If you own any be glad. This will be a great wine.

Thanks for the note Alan. I opened a 1990 of this wine a week ago and it was lovely. Floral rose notes, a hint of tar, minerality. We get so caught up in the Giacosa, Conterno, Sandrone, etc wines that we tend to overlook lesserknown producers like this but they can make lovely wine.

Alan,

When would you think is the best time to drink this? I have a bunch.

And talk about an impulse buy, I also have a 3 liter of this!

Ken

It is real young now but with a long decant then some time in the glass and time to warm up after coming out of the cellar, drinking well.

I will wait another 3-5 years before I taste again. “Best time” I do not know but I suspect in 7-10 years will be entering its prime time with years to go

You know, I think the double mag is such an impractically sized bottle - not criticizing Ken, merely making an observation, as I have a few myself and I virtually never find an opportunity to open one. That said, I think that Cavallotto is definitely a nice producer from a QPR perspective, and that '01 should last for quite some time.

I had the 98 of this recently and it was just screaming but clearly on the early side of maturity rather than the late side. Based on producer, vintage, and the recent 98 experience, I’m not planning on starting on my 01s San Giuseppes for about 5-8 years.

In the meanwhile, the 04 and 05 Bricco Boschis drink fantastically well for young wines!
