TN: 2001 Bodegas y Viñedos Alión Ribera del Duero

2001 Bodegas y Viñedos Alión Ribera del Duero - Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero (2/18/2016)
Served blind, double decanted earlier in the AM:

Complex aromas of red berries, leather, subtle spice and flowers - this is fun to smell. It’s also fun to drink, as the palate presence is quite silky, and despite the very dark color, the wine is not heavy at all. There is still a bit of tannic framework, and the acids are good, so the balance of the wine is spot on. Yes it’s a modern style of wine, but impeccable in its presentation. Very enjoyable!

These are exceptionally well-made and balanced wines. I opened my last bottle of the 1996 some months ago and it was still way too young, but clearly had everything in place to be just fabulous in, say, ten years.
