TN: 2000 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets

Opened just because I saw it in my cellar last night . Nice accompaniment to our meal, after a long bike ride, listening to British pop (The Smiths).

  • 2000 Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru (8/10/2014)
On first opening with a small glass poured out, it was off, with an almost volatile acidity like quality, but it calmed down with 2-3 hours of air in the bottle with one glass poured out.

Healthy cherry color, barely paling at the rim. Aromas at first are overwhelming violets/floral qualities, but with touches of bittersweet chocolate and an iron shavings sort of “tang.” Very nice palate-- shows well for the vintage. Rich with juicy and fresh red fruit and minerals, and solid acidity/moderate tannins. Just hasn’t seemed to age substantially since I last tasted in 2006, maybe rounder overall, still actually on the young side, even in my passive cellar (45 to 65 degrees). Long tangy red fruit finish. (91 pts.)

Had the 2000 Taillepieds not long ago, and was showing beautifully, with plenty left in the tank and no hurry to drink up.

D’Angerville did great in 2000.

Yes, had the Champans 2000 several times, complex, interesting but approachable. Caillerets is definitely a step up in complexity from the Champans.

I’m still somewhat surprised how slowly the Caillerets seems to be aging, though I didn’t taste it between '06 and '14, so it may have gone through a closed phase in the interim?

Clos de Ducs from that year was awesome and blind I would have guessed a GC of some kind. Thanks for the note, Peter.
