TN: 2000 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée

I just love it when this wine is on, and oh man is this a good bottle. Paul Jaouen was giving me a hard time for drinking the 2004, saying that he is working his 2000’s instead. OK, heavy props to Paul. He is totally right!

Holy toledo, this bottle was screaming. Popped and poured and just picture perfect Pegau. Brambly, wild, gamey, ripe, spicy, Provencale herbs, grilled plums, white pepper, hint of quinine on the finish. Beefy stuff. (96 pts.)

Great update Eric. Sounds like I need to get some of mine out of storage.

I know this wine can be controversial with a few on here, but I love it. So much so that I originally bought too much of it - 9 cases! It has been drinking so well, I had to sell off some last year out of fear some would go over the hill.

Anyone want to speculate on a drinking window based on how it’s drinking now? I still have quite a bit and might need to sell off or drink even more!

Chris

No controversy from me, this wine is always great.
Great note Eric.
Tempting me to pull one for tonight.
Cheers.

9 cases, impressive!

Given how strongly the 1989 and 1990 are going I think you have plenty of time left.

And I thank you.

Nice note Eric.

Chris, 9 cases!!! I thought I was crazy when I bought 4 cases. Drunk 2 of them already.

Last night I tasted the '95 Pegau out of magnum. While it still showed some serious tannins, it had more fruit than 750s I’ve had and the tannins didn’t seem so dense. Still not a vintage I would search out.

I am guilty of being a several case buyer and imbiber of this wine.
When the brett is in check this stuff is fabulous.
Thanks for the note Eric.,

I think this wine is definitely heading downhill and you ought to sell off some more. PM me.

Whoa guys! I didn’t mean to give the wrong impression that the wine was in decline. Rather, I was shocked at how well rounded it was drinking and I was sitting on a ton of it. I’ve had tons of bottles, but I do have a few other wines in my cellar. I thought it would really be hitting its stride around 2015 and it matured much earlier and was just worried I would still end up with several cases on the downhill slide later next decade. Nothing worse IMO than holding an already great wine only to find you should have enjoyed it earlier. Now I have just enough (well, maybe a few too many) to enjoy the full journey.

Slightly OT, but I did learn a lesson that perhaps there is too much of a good thing. But it also shows what I thought of the wine when I had it early and went long.

BTW - the 01 is an exceptional wine (that I also have quite a stash of) and the 98 is really singing IMO.

Chris

Chris, I think Dan was joking.

Oh, I knew he was, but I was just trying to clarify for everyone that I don’t think this wine is in decline.

Chris

Fantastic wine! IMO, this is still 10 years from its peak.
