TN: 2000 Domaine de la Janasse Cuvee Chaupin CDP

This was a pop-and-pour because I had to think quickly of something interesting to open for a friend who brought her daughter over for an impromptu play date with our little girl. Surprisingly dark in the glass, this 10-year-old barely showed any color at the edges. Right out of the gate, the nose was strong with barnyard, earth, and some herbs. In the mouth, the earth and barnyard predominated, and some rich, dark plum fruit and provencale spice made their way into the profile as the wine warmed a little. These elements blended harmoniously together in a way that made me reach for the glass. I would say this wine was voluptuous, but if “slutty” has become an acceptable wine descriptor it would also tell the story well enough. There was plenty of structure to suggest that this Chaupin will last for years, and fine, drying tannins ushered the finish away. I think I have had this wine three times before tonight, and this was by far its best showing. Our guest commented that it was extremely well balanced and enjoyable to drink, even with no food. Great bottle!
