I saw a tasting note on this wine recently that was not good so I thought I’d give it a try.
Pop and Pour.
Well it has a bdx nose but that’s the best thing can say about it. This wine is definitely on the downward slide compared to the last bottle I had about a year ago, so if you got em, drink em now.
I opened my last bottle of this wine today after a couple of intense meetings scheduled the next couple of days. I read Sax’s less than sterling TN and thought it was time to go for it.
A decant of one hour so far. The nose is definitely Bordeaux with a slight funk. The color is a dark and consistent purple without bricking.
The palate also displays a slight funk, there is an array of dark fruits, cherry and licorice that is slightly black and somewhat bitter.
It is not over the hill, not losing it’s intensity but it is not a sterling bottle of wine and to me has never been. I guess the “palate” just over estimated this wine too. It shouldn’t be forgotten that this was a $13.00 bottle of wine so it was always good value, just never a great Bordeaux. I think that Lyle’s amusing name change of Charfail is more a reflection to Parker’s irrational exuberance, than the price/quality of this cru Chateau.

I saw this post and seeing as I was sitting four bottles of this I thought I’d better pop one ASAP. So I did and it’s sitting in front of me now and it’s a delicious pop and pour. Neener, neerer. Still purple to the rim. Great nose, true bordeaux flavors. Silky tannins. Not the longest finish but I’m glad I have three more.
I am finishing the remaining half of my bottle right now. It is still a little cold but the off putting nose and bitter palate has eased. It is much better and I think that Sax must have just been eating too many blueberries or homeless men with his bottle.
