TN: 2000 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova

  • 2000 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (8/18/2009)
Dark, both in color and character. A “modern” wine that is aging pretty well. Some drying wood tannin remains, and this is definitely extracted with a touch of bitterness on the finish, but it also is at a decent ripeness level and has a lot of sweet earth, baking bread and dried fruit character that speaks clearly of Brunello. Casanova has been caught red handed cheating at DOCG rules, but I think the wine is still Brunello, essentially, for better or worse. Not my favorite, and I would prefer more purity and lift and less wood, but a good wine with many years to go yet.
