1999 Paolo Scavino Barolo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (6/26/2009)
nose: lush and beautiful nose of red cherries, herbs, bits of spices, red florals, and some bits of menthol. Great depth and very perfumed at this young stage, but obviously very primary as this doesn’t have that second gear just yet, but what is present is very pretty and quite enjoyable
taste: Very pretty with medium/high acidity and medium+ tannins with plush tones of red cherries, herbs, roses, bits of berries and a touch of menthol with some anise seed starting to poke through. Great feel that is nice and plush that is still very primary, but drinking at a primary stage right now
overall: Just starting to drink, and if you like your Barolo on the more primary side, this is in a good place. Personally I like some more evolution, but certainly have zero qualms about drinking this right now. Very lovely with a nice elegance to it, this should develop nicely and be extremely interesting in another 3-4 years (91 pts.)

I’m a fan of the primary stages of Barolo, for sure, and particularly if you have additional bottles to enjoy in later years.
Nice note, Keith - the '99 vintage may be one of those years that takes a lot of time for the wines to “come together”. Probably not as slow to come around as '96, but I think the '01’s will be drinking better earlier than the 99’s. I did not get any of Scavino’s normale this year (I still have a bottle or two of the '89, and that wine is drinking great right now), but I do have a case of the Carobric tucked away in the cellar, and off your note I don’t think I will be disturbing it anytime soon.
bob-I had the 99 carobric last year, and it was at least 3-4 years away from begining to drink. This normale is much more open then the carobric(and I would imagine the same for teh Bric del Fiasc)
todd-I certainly agree. I definitely enjoyed the wine as its in that early drinking stage where its still primary, but not overbearing on either the acidity or tannins. I got this for a good price, so I’m certainly going to pick up two or three more to watch the evolution of it
We uncorked a 99 Carobric last night to go along with Spahgetti & Meatballs + some sautéed Calamari as a starter.
Wine had all the right parts but the menthol, or mouth-tingling tannin, was the wine’s dominant characteristic. Nose was terrific: flowers, touch of leather & plums. All considered not my favorite and I’m not sure more time sideways helps.

Have to admit that I am impressed that you actually located an almost seven year old thread in order to keep your TN in context
