Luís Pato is one of my biggest holdings, yet I rarely seem to tap into that stash. Truth be told, I might lack the AFWE credentials to do it much more often, because sometimes you land on a bottle like this. Unlike the graceful 2000 vintage, this is tight, foreboding, austere, and still extremely youthful Baga, with a primary nose of tart berries, black tea and a hint of loamy earth. The tannin packs a big punch and the acidity is on the plus side, and at age 26 I wonder where it can still go from here.

I have some 2000 and 2001. Have you had any recent experience with those vintages? I, too, don’t open them that often, though at least one has showed really well. On the other hand, I don’t own so many to begin with.
Had the 2000 last year and enjoyed it much more. Fresh and youthful, but not hard and foreboding.

I think I still have a couple of the 2000 left. Last had it about a year ago. Thought it could use a bit more time.
A Pan 2001 in 2014 was lovely. A Barrio in 2015 was very tart and not that enjoyable.
I see I have one more '01 Pan left. Guess I better drink that up!

Thomas, do these back vintages come ot on a rolling basis? Did the 1999 come out before/after the 2000/2001?
Luís Pato always releases his upper end wines with some cellar time. Some of these back vintages were my purchases, while others were gifts from him.
