TN: 1999 Donnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Spatlese

Served blindly last night.

What a lovely wine! There was an unusual, almost custard-flavor here (think nutmeg and cream), and a silky texture like, well, custard. I guessed an 01 or 02 Spatlese from someplace other than the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. There was something one might describe as earthy, so I figured it might be a Nahe. And it didn’t have the MSR acid backbone or apple/pear profile.

This wasn’t a wine that offered a check list of aromas and flavors. It was just seamless and beautifully evolved. 92+

This was a friend’s bottle, but I bought some from the winery on Claude Kolm’s recommendation. In 99, he felt Donnhoff’s lesser vineyards produced better balanced wines. Certainly this turned out well. Sure am glad I still have a couple.

Served blindly or blind?

Well, it’s an adverb here, so blindly is probably fine.

Fair enough. I knew what you meant, but it did make me do a double-take. Sounds like a fantastic bottle. Thanks for the note!

The Kirschheck is the favorite Donnhoff '99 at Schloss Bueker.

For good reason.

Thanks for the note John.

I heard some where, where was that? Donnhoff’s don’t age well.

BTW - the 2010 Kirschheck (I assume typo with ‘Kirschbeck’) is the best I have ever had from this site. Its potential with a few years under its belt is limitless.

Fixed. Thanks.

Kirschheck is the unheralded vineyard, and lucky for us that it remains under the radar. You get the elegance and grace of Donnhoff Spätlese for just around $30. Granted I still buy Hermannshohle, but Kirschheck is easy on the wallet.
