1999 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay- France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay (10/29/2009)
A nose of pure crushed rocks and violets. Quite dense, sappy red to almost blue fruit. Just great concentration and minerality, with a perfectly poised cut of acidity that minorly cuts into the finish. Just awesome for a village wine. Still very fresh and primary and in need of 5+ years to absorb some more structure and develop some.
This bottle sounds like it was rockin’, Josh. Thanks for the note. I’ve got a couple of the '99 Clos du Chateau des Ducs that rank very highly in the Most Anticipated Bottles section of my collection, but I’m committed to holding off on them for a while still. If the Volnay village still needs 5, I might need to think about holding off longer than I thought.
Have you tasted the '06 Lafarge Volnay by chance? That’s one I’ve been thinking about picking up a few bottles from. I hear good things.
I have some 06’s coming but haven’t tried any yet. The only 06 Volnays I’ve tried so far are the d’Angerville Volnay 1er Cru and the Bouchard Clos des Chenes. Both were very good wines but d’Angerville is much more in my wheelhouse sytlistically than Bouchard, at least for Volnay.
