TN: 1999 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans

Or Paul Wassermann!

I opened the 2011 last night, and it was both radiant and striking in its salinity, a radiating non-unctuous graphite-ish pain grille tour de force.

Actually, it was a pretty wine that seemed in weight and temperament more like a beaujolais than a volnay. Shockingly for its age, there seemed to be very little in the way of underlying tannins. I know 2011 was a “light” year (not a “light year”) but this was not what I was expecting at all. It was a pleasure to drink but not what I would call memorable, and I would certainly not buy it again given the price.

Despite having radiant, striking, graphite and salinity in its descriptor the wine turns out to be not memorable. You are tough grader. [wow.gif]

I do think it was a “maybe”, depending on one’s criteria…sort of like the "did Henri Jayer or Emmanuel Rouget “make” the wines? Certainly, at some point…Rouget did, though Jayer never disappeared from the process.

My understanding, from a visit in 2004 with Renaud de Villette, Jacque’s son in law , is that Jacques was limited after 1999 by health issues. (He canceled an appointment in March 2001 with us…due to that, so I never met him.)

Then Guillaume “took over” but de Villette was still “there”. I don’t think Guillaume was capable of making the wines at first…on a visit in 2007, he still seemed shaky…and was oblivious to any issues with the 2004s, which were poxed as badly as anyone’s…

And, here’s some more heresy…I prefer their Taillepieds to the Clos des Ducs…think it is a more complete wine…though the latter gets all the attention. I’m wondering if that was an aspect of the tasting with Meadows?

I prefer their Taillepieds as well. I find it more pleasurable - I think it’s a bit more forward, and every time I drink one, I find it intoxicating (not literally). The Ducs may be a more ‘complete’ wine, but the Taillepieds just gets me right there.

I think Taillepieds is the best vineyard in Volnay. de Montille makes a great one, too… and it is a terrific vineyard for any appellation…
