1999 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée- France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (4/25/2017)
Everything you could want in a properly aged Chateauneuf du Pape is in this wine. Old leather, rosemary, turned earth and the classic kirsch aroma all dance and swirl to create a clear sign of Pegau. There’s still notable tannin, so no rush, but what a wonderful bottle of wine!
Definitely one of the best mature Pegau-vintages available … and a sign for the longivity of these wines … 2000+2001 are more concentrated and structured, but even the 1999 can go easily another 10+ years (when well cellared).
It is however a vintage with often a noticable amount of brett, usually (in Europe !?) of a low level that (IMHO) adds to the complexity and typicity … but I had also ONE almost undrinkable example - not from my cellar … something must have happened to this bottle on it´s way to the table …
I cannot argue about bottles somewhere else (overseas …) where the brett often seems to be too much …
We had a '99 Clos des Papes over the weekend and if I’d written a note it would have been virtually interchangeable with this one on the Pegau. I no longer enjoy CdP very much, but this one was objectively excellent, as it sounds like the Pegau was. '99s are doing beautifully, it seems.
99 has always been one of my favorite Pegaus. Never hasn’t tasted great. Alas I also only have a couple of bottles left out of a case and a half, I think. Years ago I traded 6 bottles of the 95 for 9 bottles of the 99 with Dan Kravitz and have never regretted it.
