I have been rather disappointed with 1999 whites after having been enthusiastic about them when tasted on barrel but here, there is nothing to be disappointed about. It’s got everything.
The nose is captivating, complex and refined, flowers and white fruits. Indicating quite some power, it is indeed a powerful palate but delivered with much elegance and a very “chevalier” style of wet stones and great delineation. Tres droit, as we’d say in French. It is quite intense, “palate staining” indeed. There is some wood but the incredible density of the wine takes it with ease and I’d even say that the wood was rather refined. As expected, the finish is of the same class and does last incredibly long. This is quite an achievement for a Puligny 1er. And would clearly put most Grand Cru to shame. Wow.
In short: best Puligny I have ever had.
