TN: 1999 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  • 1999 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (5/28/2009)
In an exercise of curiosity, I popped my second and last bottle of this and I have followed it over the last two days. Same exact profile as the last bottle. That takes bottle variation out of the equation. It does seem tired and over the hill to me. So the only thing I can imagine is that these bottles were stored sub-optimal sometime before I purchased them or that this wine is indeed in decline, in which case it would be interesting to see what other tasters experience with this wine right now. No obvious flaws though, and to me, no sign of overt heat damage (like stewed tomato notes or the like).

We had the 1999 CdP, CnP a few weeks ago and it must have been from a different shipment as it was great and not in decline IMVHO

First of all, THAT is a beautiful picture (although I shouldn’t expect anything less from you, should I). Second, I figure the bottles I had must have been weird…the Beaucastel I had a few days earlier was amazing and seemed young. Maybe it was a storage issue.
