TN: 1999 Château Rieussec (France, Bordeaux, Sauternes)

  • 1999 Château Rieussec - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (3/16/2011)
    – popped and poured –
    – tasted non-blind over 30 minutes –

NOSE: intense and expressive; apricot; tons of botrytis spice; not very complex.

BODY: golden orange color of great depth; full bodied – thick.

TASTE: very intense; biscuity apricot; creamy; definitely on the fat side – even a bit too fat for me; nice biscuity oak on the finish; needs more acidity; either lacking in acidity, or simply way too young yet. If this ages well, it will be on the strength of its incredible concentration of fruit.

Had the same reaction to a 99’ that I had a couple of months ago…pretty fat. Funny though, even if it’s not what I wanted it to be, it was still a complete joy to drink. I find that true of Sauternes more than any other region/varietal.
