1999 Bollinger Coteaux Champenois La Côte aux Enfants- France, Champagne, Aÿ, Coteaux Champenois (6/20/2009)
This was an interesting science experiment (red still wine from Champagne). This was much better than the last time I had it when it was an acidic monster. I’m not sure how but it seems the acid has calmed down. That said, this was rather thin, light and short. Not hideous, but not great either. This certainly won’t turn any heads.
An interesting bottle that is about 5-6 times too expensive for the quality. There is only one still red I like from Champagne and that is Clicquot’s Clos Colin in Bouzy. It isn’t commercialized any more, but I’ve had bottles of this from the 80s and 90s and it easily holds its ground with very good Burgundy. IMO Clos Colin is probably the best vineyard for Pinot Noir in Champagne. It’s production is normally used for the red wine in the Clicquot Roses with Grande Dame Rose getting the biggest chunk and then the vintage and NV (as needed). The 2008 wine from this vineyard still haunts me a few months after tasting it.
What gets me is that people actually buy it. Bollinger keeps the production low and has contemplated discontinuing it, but why when it sells at a high price.
I bought it as a novelty, dry red from Champagne. Now I can say I’ve had it if anyone cares to ask. I made sure to foist it upon, er, um… SHARE it with others so they could say the same w/out having to shell out the pennies.
As a one time exploration, I’ve bought it too. That isn’t really what I meant. What boggles me a little is folks who buy it over and over again or get talked into it for the “prestige” especially when there are equal still reds from Champagne at $20-$25. Then again, if you like it for the price…
