1998 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (6/14/2009)
My last bottle of this, and the wine continues to impress and surprise me. When I first poured this yesterday, the wine seemed thin and tired on the palate. A day later this has really come into its own. The palate has filled out and the fruit has become plusher and more velvety. Nose shows spice, herbs, berry, and beef blood. Palate hands out deep, dark, layered blackberry and plum fruit. Underneath all of the fruit there is nice acidity and earthiness. Finishes exceptionally long and with an exciting garrigue note. To me, this is textbook top-tier CdP from a hot year. Best showing of this wine so far and based on my tasting over two days, there is no need to drink this anytime soon. Should certainly have 5 years left in the tank.
