TN: 1998 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige

  • 1998 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (6/14/2009)
My last bottle of this, and the wine continues to impress and surprise me. When I first poured this yesterday, the wine seemed thin and tired on the palate. A day later this has really come into its own. The palate has filled out and the fruit has become plusher and more velvety. Nose shows spice, herbs, berry, and beef blood. Palate hands out deep, dark, layered blackberry and plum fruit. Underneath all of the fruit there is nice acidity and earthiness. Finishes exceptionally long and with an exciting garrigue note. To me, this is textbook top-tier CdP from a hot year. Best showing of this wine so far and based on my tasting over two days, there is no need to drink this anytime soon. Should certainly have 5 years left in the tank.

Steffen - thx. I have become a fan of Roger Sabon. Clean, classic CdP IMO

Very true, TV. The trick is to give this time to open up. If I had posted my note based on my first impression, it would not have been favorable. Alas I had had the wine before, so I knew to be patient…Either way, this wine takes a little effort to get to know. It just doesn’t get right in your face.

BTW - I hope you are open to getting together in Austin next time I am there…Traci is there now with her parents in the Westlake area

Tony. Absolutely. Next time you come to town, just let me know and I’ll put together a nice evening with some great people here in Austin (Greg Pierce and Shannon Perdue on this board are but two of the many more serious collectors here).
