TN: 1998 Qupe Syrah Bien Nacido Hillside Estate

Pop and pour. Opens with some alcohol on the nose and palate. A bit of a distraction. It mellows some with air, as tart raspberry fruit that has a slightly roasted taste emerges. THere is some earth, smoke, and pepper, too. The wine is drinking nicely if you like red fruit and some acidity to your syrah. Does well with my mushroom quesadilla. Not on the level of the '97 and '99 I’ve consumed recently. Finishes with some slightly unresolved alochol. Hit the last bottle over the next year.

I recall being disappointed in that wine vis a vis the '97 when they were both young, so I’m not surprised.
