1998 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau- France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (12/23/2014)
Absolutely beautiful showing for my last bottle of this vintage. Purchased on release from Kermit Lynch and perfectly stored. Fully mature,“old school” Chateauneuf…It could last longer but I would not keep them as they seem to be showing extremely well right now. Excellent mouth feel, in beautiful balance with no elements out of place. Slightly “animal” with briary, dark fruit. A touch of Provencal spice, showing rosemary, pine and even lavender . To me, everything in its’ proper place. (95 pts.)
Burned thru a half case, and some back-filling, as well Marshall. I have read about bad bottles from 1998 but have not had one, this wine way above the Mendoza line for me too.
Had a few bottles of this and agree with everything you’ve said…almost verbatim. In a great spot right now.

Consistent with previous bottles. Very funky, meaty, full of rich fruit, and baking spices. The palate is very balanced and declious. Ready to drink but with no risk of decline. Maybe even room for a little upside.
I agree this is drinking well today, and should continue to do so. Our local wine bar had the 98 VT, Pegau Reservee, and Beaucastel open on Monday for a comparison tasting. All showed really well, the Beaucastel was exceptional, so I back filled a few bottles of it as I’m already long on the other two.
Another fan here, thanks for the note. Still have a few bottles left and agree that they are showing really well now with no signs of going OTH any time soon.
Like the 95, I drank quite a few of these young, but I felt it shut down sooner and harder than the 95. I think I have about nine left and I’ll be in no hurry. My best VT experiences have been with older ones, and if the 98 follows the evolution of the 95 it will be even better in several years. I’ll probably try another soon, though. I had it a couple years ago and it was very promising.
