1998 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée- France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (10/17/2009)
This rocks. Big, burly, brambly, iodine, band-aid, Provencale herbs, meaty, spicy, intense. Pure pleasure in a glass. So spicy and herbal and vibrant. Absolutely wonderful. (95 pts.)
Its about time you got with the program… the 04 is drinking great right. Thanks to RMP, the 03 is priced too high, but 04-06 can be had relatively cheaply.
Track down some 1999 if you want to see the aged profile on these. As mentioned the 2004 rocks right now albeit in a youthful way. I think that 98 and 00 are drinking just fantastically. I am avoiding my 01 and 03 for as long as I can.
I didn’t start collecting Pegau until the 03 ( I got in on the ground floor, BTW.) The first two bottles I had rung my chimes… actually changed my wine drinking life. The third seemed to have shut down so I’ve determined that my remaining stash will slumber. For how long? I have no idea but one does wonder about the the longevity of the wines from this incredibly hot vintage. I was in Provence during this summer’s heat wave… 95-100, dry, sunny, everyday but the stories I heard about the heat of 2003 were (comparatively) apocryphal.
CNDP is always pretty hot. 2003 was not so extreme there as in other parts. I would not worry about the ageability of the 2003 but rather when it will be ready.
Pegau ranks amongst my favorite wines, and the '98 amongst the best vintages I’ve had. I had one about 2 yrs ago and it seemed a bit young, nice to see it’s opening up now.
We tasted the '95 and '98 Pegau Reservees this weekend both imported by J et R. I didn’t take notes but my impressions were that the 1998 was still quite vibrant and primary. Very nice, but will benefit from a few years in the cellar to develop further.
Despite rumors in some corners of the interweb that the 1995s have started a death spiral, this bottle was fabulous. If this is representative of this vintage, please serve me more of it…right now.
FWIW, I opened two bottles of Le Vieux Donjon CdP…the first was corked, the second oxidized.

This wine was one of my first “wow” wines for CdP. I remember sharing a half bottle with Kimberly’s father(in 00), and him raving about it. I went on the hunt for it the next day only to run into it case stacked at Cost Plus for $20 each. Needless to say, I bought two cases, one for me and one for the father in law. I drank mine up much too fast. I would love to try this wine again.
