TN: 1998 Domaine de la Mordorée Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois

  • 1998 Domaine de la Mordorée Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (4/3/2016)
Opened to accompany grilled lamb chops. Darker garnet. Nose of currant, char, lavender, garrigue, black pepper. Robust but softened layers of smoky plum, asphalt, sweet garrigue, and stone. Plenty of rich, tangy fruit amidst dusty tannin and low-to-moderate acidity. Long finish of sweet red and black fruits, peppery grip, and earth. Really good. (93 pts.)

We drank the 2003 last night also. I have not written a formal note yet, but it was very much in the same range with no prunish over-advanced or over-ripe features from the extremely hot vintage. we decanted for an hour and then poured back into the bottle and started drinking about 30 minutes later. Lots of sediment to decant off. What was your decant?

Jay,

It was basically pop and pour. Not a lot of change over the three hours it was open. The kids were over and don’t mind the sediment so down it went.

Cheers,
Doug
