My oh my. For this Barolo novice, without question one of the finest and most approachable I’ve drank. If I had to use one word to describe this wine I’d say perfumed. The spices, florals and menthol are showstopping, just captivating aromas. No sharp edges or overwhelming tannins here, this is graceful, regal and classy. Loads of minerally and saline character on the palate. Just amazing wine. My epiphany Barolo? Just might be.
Nice note, Peter. 1998 Barolos are generally drinking quite well now. It was such a ripe forward vintage. I especially like the 98s from traditional producers like G. Conterno, both Mascarellos, and Bruno Giacosa. For anyone who can get to one of the Total Wine stores in SC or NC, they are the last 2 selling the 1998 Mauro Mascarello Barolo Monprivato at $40. I guess we’ve cleaned out the stores in Jersey and Virginia. I know one person who has gone thru over 10 cases of this wine!
I know you California boys have a little trouble with East Coast geography, but that’s close to 1000 miles from here. If they get more of it in Jersey, I’d be delighted to pick some up for you.
Oh, and let me just say, this thread is some serious . . .
