1998 Château Barde-Haut- France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (2/10/2011)
Decanted an hour and a half. Maroon-ish to purple with a clear rim. Classic Bordeaux nose showing tobacco, cassis and leather. Great aromatic depth. Layered palate with some mocha, black fruit, licorice, poblano pepper, and some cigar. Great structure on this wine. The lengthy finish is accentuated by the firm tannins and a strong dose of licorice. (91 pts.)
I’ve had much better luck with the Right Bank from 1998, and this stood up well before, during and especially after dinner. Braised short ribs and pasta with homemade Roma/basil tomato sauce.
Ditto. I believe I have one more left from a six pack, and I’ve never been disappointed. The '98 Haut Corbin and '98 Moulin St. Georges have also lasted and impressed. With a little patience mixed in, the QPR of these wines has been off the charts.
