1997 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru (8/28/2014)
Served blind-ish (everyone knew it was Raveneau from the wax capsule and first taste), this was outstanding right from the get go. Waxy, lanolin, almost Chenin-esque aromatics at first, but with air (and warmth - it was too cold to start) there were pineapple and creamy elements that carried through from the nose to the palate. The richness suggested a riper vintage, so we were not shocked by the reveal of 1997. I followed the wine for the next 90 minutes, and it just kept delivering that pineapple fruit, and more minerality as the wine got more air. Outstanding showing for this wine. Drink it if you have it. It’s hard to imagine it being better than it was last night.
