TN: 1997 Bressan Cru Pignol (Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT)

Sometimes you know a wine could age, but that the gain from that will not outweigh the loss of the primary life and vibrancy - this was one of those wines. Both of us loved it.

Wow. Layers of slightly smokey fruit and an intricately tiered structure. Earthy tones, fougere underpinning dark fruits. Structure was just vibrant with bass notes, upper harmonies as well as a push. Long finish with black currants, musk and lapsong souchang tea notes. Very well integrated and balanced. Could easily age, but I suspect I would regret the loss of such dynamic primary elements. Beautiful, delicious stuff.

I have really dug everything I have had from Bressan. Not outré, but beautifully, subtly distinctive. I really wish I had taken a leap and loaded up from Garagiste when this was offered. Paired incredibly well with Zuni-recipe roast chicken, confit potatoes and salad.

Thanks for the note, I was curious about their Pignol. Their Pinot Nero is delicious, and I think subtly distinctive is spot on. They are pretty widely available too (I had no trouble finding in Dallas or Boston).

Their '04 Pinot Grigio is quite interesting, as well.

Loves me that Pinot Nero. I have the '03 Pinot Grigio which I intend to have soon.

My wife likes some wines, but it is rare that she really likes one. She is pickier than I. She really loved the Pignol.

Thanks for the note. I pulled this and 2005 Pegau for dinner last Saturday, and opted for Pegau. Perhaps this weekend we’ll check out Bressan. Pop & pour into Bordeaux stems?

Popped and let stand about 1/2 hr. Bdx stem(less) O’s.

Great, thanks.
