1997 Barone Ricasoli Casalferro Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT (8/6/2009)
I had picked up a bunch of this juice after some tastings at the estate in Tuscany. 97 was the first year Ricasoli blended any Merlot with the Sangiovese (previous vintages were 100% Sangiovese). in 97 they used just a smattering of Merlot (less that 10%) subsequent years they went up to a 75/25 ratio and I “believe” today the blend is even more balanced. This was opened and sat for 90 minutes before a decant anticipating sedimentation allowing it to settle. This did throw off a fair amount of sediment.
Dark and rich in the glass with a slight bricking the nose was rather muted but there were hints of mocha, meat and a little cigar box (however it could have been me and my summer sinuses…LOL). This wine was fantastic. In my opinion this is a big wine with a beautiful oppulent mouthfeel it was really lovely ending with a very nice finish.
Not sure how much longer this could age (my cork was almost soaked through) but is a joy to drink. Allowed to breathe or pop and pour a decant is a must!
Four yums: Yum…yum…yum…yum!!! (91 pts.)
