TN: 1996 Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Goldert (France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru AOC)

I’ve CV’d this bottle a couple times in the last 3 months……darker copper in color….shows sweet and rich apricot, pineapple, grapefruit, orange marmalade….age has definitely set in with a little oxidization….but still some nice fresh citrus acidity(blood orange, grapefruit)….wonderful creamy feel ala an aged Sauternes….some burnt sugar, dried apricot, clover honey, cold tea, savory minerals, florals. Drinks more like a savory aged sticky……holding on with some nice complexities and tastiness. A contemplating sipper kind of wine. (91 pts.)

I actually Coravined this first on 10-13-13…so it has held up quite well after the first access. I didn’t take a note that time….but do remember it being pretty much the same as my tn. It did though leak when I put it back in the rack…so I’ve been standing it up ever since.

These wines seem to have been painted with the “parkerized” brush, but i think that’s unfair. They are an extreme style, and Gewurz is not to everyone’s taste to begin with, but they have aged remarkably well.

I will say, I struggle to have much more than a glass, I find them best shared with a group or as a glass with a course with dinner. I’m also a little bit at a loss of whether to serve them at the start or end of a meal.
