1996 Pierre Gimonnet Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Fleuron 1er Cru - France, Champagne (8/24/2014)
Transparent golden with tiny bubbles. Baked apple, lemons, chalk, and nuts on the nose, with a hint of white flowers and a sherried/oxidative quality I generally associate with Krug. A beautiful balance between the acidity and the heavier lemon curd/apple components on the nose. Very very delicious champagne drinking pretty much at its peak (at least for my palate).

Greg, I had this wine a week ago, and that particular bottle seemed tired. The oxidative quality was a distraction rather than an enhancement or complexity component, such as what you experienced. Could be a provenance difference on these two bottles, or maybe a difference in preference. In a perfect world, it would have been nice to try both bottles side by side to determine the true difference. Thanks forposting the note.
This Champagne is probably in its peak drinking window. The oxidative quality has been increasing over time. We have the remainder of ours in the queue for the next couple of years. It has really been a winner for vintage Champagne - high quality and reasonably priced on release. #winning
This wine typically does not show much, if any, oxidation upon release. The juice is on the lees for five years, which gives the wine lots of depth. Again, for my palate, it’s time to drink these up.
