TN: 1996 Domaine Lucien Boillot et Fils Pommard 1er Cru Les Croix Noires

  • 1996 Domaine Lucien Boillot et Fils Pommard 1er Cru Les Croix Noires - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru (11/27/2014)
Opened about 1 hour prior to serving. At first, it seemed like a wall of tannins and oak barred the way into anything else. After a few hours though, it turned delicious. Black raspberry, truffle, and forest floor came first. With more air, blueberry and pomegranate emerged. The oak never really went away but it did recede a lot, giving this wine surprising balance. A very, very pleasant experience after I’d waited a few hours. (89 pts.)

Thanks for the good note here, Beau. These wines, now made by son Pierre, are old school and can be bit rustic, but they are generally very good. Gevrey-Chambertin Cherbaudes, from really old vines, is exceptional.

I have the 96 Champonnets from Boillot too, I’m very intrigued to see how it’ll show. I completely agree with you about the rusticity, for me that was a plus though, as it was just enough to add a certain charm to the wine without having it be harsh and inaccessible.

Agreed.
