TN: 1996 Ch. Des Jacques / Jadot, Clos de Rochegres, Moulin-A-Vent

TN: 1996 Ch. Des Jacques / Jadot, Clos de Rochegres, Moulin-A-Vent. Rather subdued nose. Dark fruits in the background served up on wood tannins. The finish isn’t exactly hot at 13% alcohol, but the fruit has faded enough without growing into something more interesting to leave it a touch of noticeable. I sort of have doubts about Jadot’s Moulin-A-Vent bottlings and the amount of wood they apparently see - this did nothing to change that opinion. Meh. Serviceable, if just, but not nearly of as good as the 1976 Moulin-a-Vent from another producer I posted about a few weeks ago. 80 points.

That’s too bad you didn’t enjoy this. I had a '96 Thivin that I loved. This isn’t a wine I’m likely to buy much of these days given the quality that’s available for just a few dollars more (and sometimes less)

Thanks for the note. Sadly not surprising. This I agree with:

I was a big fan of the Chateau des Jacques site in Moulin-A-Vent that Jadot purchased, the '49 Clos des Jacques, (when the Thorin firm owned it) is one of the greatest bottles of wine I have ever had - but I am not giving up on them. I am still torn over whether because of the wood they show best in their first 5-6 years, or they need 20 years plus - obviously your note says to drink young -

I’ll pop an '09 this weekend to see where it is at -

I loved the 2009 but it was super-oaky. I bought the regular 2009 Moulin a Vent which was much less oaky. I’m holding them mostly for experimental purposes.

Never had the 1996 but that was a year when Thorin family was selling the property (Jadot bought it 1997) so I would look much into that wine to judge the Chateau as wine making, yields, selection was completely different than it is now.
