TN: 1995 Souverain Cabernet Sauvignon Winemaker's Reserve

  • 1995 Souverain Cabernet Sauvignon Winemaker’s Reserve - USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley (1/7/2012)
MAN I love these wines! This wine is drinking perfectly right now…dark and rich plum, cherry, blackberry fruit…almost port-like dark fruit! Wonderful dusty oak barrel cedar spice, mocha, cherry liqueur cordials, anise seed, dried cranberry. What cream smoothness…yet firm backbone, and tart acidic spice kick. Very complex…showing even some menthol tobacco and herbs. Really packed with flavor, aged complexity just starting to show something, yet structurally sound and built for more age. Great wine…especially for the money! (94 pts.)

Brian, I have to agree. For the money they are very, very nice wines. Not only that, they have a history of aging quite well. I have probably had more good 10+ year old Sourverains than any other US winery. It’s been 2-3 years since I had one but your note makes me want to hunt a few down. Totally under the radar.

I bought a 94-96 vertical of these at the winery, probably in 98. Drank them all at 5 years old and they were truly beautiful. Wish I’d been smart enough to buy more than one 3-pack. Roy, if you track any down, please let me know where.
