Mould covered cork. Fill level perfect and cork slides out with a pop. No problems here.
20 minute decant. Stewed cherries, raspberries and a hint of violet/lavender from the decanter. Strong nose.
Deep red with brown/purple tinge, the wine sits in the glass with a high, pale meniscus.
Nose stays strong and takes on a sour cherry note in the glass, hinting at the acid that is slightly unbalanced at first but mostly resolved with more time in the glass. Crisp, even crunchy, acidity and a degree of freshness stay with the wine throughout.
Tannins completely resolved and ever-so-fine. Quite a sweet wine on the palate – some strawberry, raspberry and just a hint of crisp red apple. The Gevrey earthiness is there, but mostly on the nose. Is that a hint of clove, asks the wife? Could well be. Nose promises a bit more than the palate delivers.
A smooth wine, medium bodied with medium length. A degree of viscosity that eases with time but does not disappear. It’s best work is done in the mid-palate, where it coats the inside of the mouth. Expands across the palate. After 2 hours still surprisingly fresh, and getting a touch richer on the palate. Could this need a few more years to soften the acid just a tad? Perhaps, but the wine may not have the stuffing for it.
