1995 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Bottled - USA, California, Napa Valley (7/24/2009)
This was a very nice, elegant wine. I might have mistaken it for a St Emilion, but then again, I’m not the most discriminating of tasters with regard to knowing that sort of thing. Dark, muddy plum color with lightening at the edges; clearly a wine with some age. The nose smells like the sweeter end of Bordeaux: cassis, cedar, earth, perhaps coffee. In the mouth the wine has good, satisfying sweet fruit with mostly resolved sweet tannin and good, freshening acidity. The main flaws were a less than expected (or desired) weight on the palate, a bit of a hole in the mid-palate, and only a modest finish. But it ends up with that good acidity, so it is really an outstanding wine. Our only bottle. (91 pts.)
