TN: 1995 E. Guigal Hermitage (France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage)

  • 1995 E. Guigal Hermitage - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage (11/1/2009)
Drinking beautifully…soft and med bodied…Rhone flavors of old leather, meat, earth, little black pepper, dried florals. More red fruited, slightly dry and tart, but holding well. Not terribly complex, but tasty. (91 pts.)

Brian, by ‘holding well’, are you stating that you think this wine still has some time left?

Take my note with a grain of salt…since I’ve been trying to get over a 2 week sickness.

I brought this wine to a Halloween party, and just had a glass. The flavors were as expected, the wine seemed to be well balanced, not in decline, but not gaining anything either. I’ve had this wine before, and from my note, looks like I enjoyed it a lot more:

1995 - Plum cranberry in color. Beautiful smokey plum, cherry, herbs, roasted beef nose. Silky smooth in the mouth. Liquid vanilla smoke, plum, black cherry/berry, cranberry fruit that’s ripe and sweet. Has wonderful earth/mineral spice tones, with old leather, roasted game, dried herbs, tobacco, integrated wood. Not a monster wine, but one with nice subtle complexity and N. Rhone style. Wonderful with Pork Chop Provencal! 94pts

All in all…the wine is holding, tasty simple Herm, not going to get better from here.
