TN: 1995 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage

We enjoyed this nice little gem last night with some grilled carne asada + BBQ with friends. The monsoons have cooled down a bit over this past weekend but look to flare back up this week.

1995 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage: I’ve had 5 of these stashed away in a box at the bottom of a stack for years now - I haven’t been motivated for a long while now to move everything to get to them until this past week . After having a very pretty '07 Chave Hermitage Rouge a couple of weekends ago I fear I may be headed for a Hermitage binge. This '95 is also quite pretty with a nose very similar '07 IMHO. Beef broth, smoke, touches of savory bacon, and daft touches of pepper - the nose is a winner on this one. I though the tannins would be more shrill for whatever reason but they weren’t - seemingly resolved and full of fruit ladened with food worthy minerality. An enjoyable drink for sure! Next up - a bottle of the 2000.

Chave continues to deliver for me. Different vintage characteristics are AOK with me from '90 to '10 - all good!

Thanks for the reference point, Jonathan. Any aeration or just a pop n pour?

Did I miss the note on the '07?

I was struck by the fact that you have Chave Hermitage with carne asada. That’s akin to Alan Weinberg’s propensity to drink DRC with chili…

Put it in a decanter right away and enjoyed it over 2-3 hours.

Grilled marinated Carne Asada tacos with Chave = match made in heaven. Yep - chili with DRC, that’s a true abomination :p.

Chave and pappys bbq!

Did you post the note on the '07 here?

Think I did T.French . At the bottom of the St. Louis thread from last week - maybe 2-3 pages deep at this point…

Yep Mike! That BBQ was good.

Jonathan,

Thanks for the nice note on this. I’ve been sitting on a couple of bottles and wondering when I should pop one. Sounds like it might be a good bet to open one sometime in the near future.

Where did you go for Q ?

one time! A la Tache with a mild chili, most of the wine being drunk after the chili. And it was great but I have taken a lot of grief for that for years!!

One DRC with chili and you are famous. That’s all it takes, man!

Pappys BBQ. I think you were at the zoo when we were watching the WorldCup final .

I know - it’s going to take me 5+years to live down this Chave+Carne Asada combo neener.

A young man moves to a village in Wales and gets talking to an old man from the village. He asks the old man what his name is; the old man gets very irate at this point and says: “See that row of houses over there? I built them all, but do they call me Jones the House Builder? Do they hell!”

“See those power lines over there? I ran them all in and built the pylons, but do they call me Jones the Lineman? Do they hell!”

“See those bridges over that river? I built them all, but do they call me Jones the Bridge Builder? Do they hell!”

“See the straight and robust road that leads to and from the village? I built that but do they call me Jones the Civil Engineer? Do they Hell”

But, I shag one sheep…"

I am pretty sheepish about the incident!

Just so we can complete the thought, could you please summarize your urology achievements?

We hit Sugarloaf or something like that out of town. Pretty tasty.

Seems there will be a new BBQ place to try each time we visit! Yummy

If you offered folks some Chave but they had to eat Carne Asada with it, I think you would have a pretty big waiting list. I would be at the head of the line.
