TN: 1995 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  • 1995 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (2/11/2012)
Decanted for one hour and consumed over the next 3. Medium garnet color. Nose of garrigue, strawberry, white pepper, earth. Surprisingly, still somewhat unyielding on the palate at first, but over the evening unpacked layers of blackberry, pepper, brambles, and sweet grip. Acidity low-to-moderate, tannins filed off, texture spare and satiny. Finish moderately long and marked by tangy red fruit. Enjoyable and nicely-integrated wine which could definitely age further. The last sips were the best. (91 pts.)

Thanks Doug. I enjoy the 94-96 trilogy. All roughly the same level qualitatively, all definitively beaucastel but they all show vintage character and aren’t hard on the wallet.

Cheers

Competely agree with your assessment Doug. I had this wine in Telluride last weekend and it showed very much the same as yours.

Faryan, Phillip,

Just came across this bottle a local retailer and thought I would give it a go. That mostly Mourvedre composition is very distinctive (and paired well with a rack of babybacks). These things can age very well.

Cheers,
Doug
