TN: 1995 Cappellano Barolo Piè Franco Otin Fiorin (Gabutti)

  • 1995 Cappellano Barolo Piè Franco Otin Fiorin (Gabutti) - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (3/29/2014)
Beautiful floral and deep nose with tar, balsam, menthol, blacker fruit and spice. Serralunga power with grace. Rich, yet not heavy with beautiful balance, great depth, inner perfume and great length. Still very youthful but not grumpy and barely starting to hint at some secondary development. Poise, power, and grace. A terrific wine with a great future. 96 pts (96 pts.)

I’ve only had this wine once, but with a very similar take about 1 1/2 years ago. Great stuff.

Great note on a rare wine. I only have this in 2007 vintage and try to find a few bottles in the newer vintages before they disappear. would love to try one with age

Maybe the wine of the vintage, though Mascarello’s Ca is similar.

I’ve never had this in the vintage. Ken, how would you compare it to the 95 Cascina Francia (only a good, not great Cascina Francia, but a wine I like very much and a pretty good '95)? Todd?

A producer I see rarely. With no scores attached to reviews it goes under the radar. Wonder how the wines are in the past decade. I will try and get few from recent vintages.

The wines have been fabulous with the 04 and 08 particulate standouts though the 05 and 09 exceed their respective vintages. The only reason these are not held in the same esteem as say a G Rinaldi is because of the lack of points attached to them. Sheeple are stupid, take advantage of them and fill your cellar with these value priced gems

Thanks for reading everyone.

Ken, totally agree. WOTV for me, although I have not had the Ca d’ Morrisio and Monfortino.

Carl, I like this maker a lot so take this with a grain of salt, but I think it is quite a better wine than the Cascina Francia which I do like quite a bit, but do not fawn over.

That said listen to Greg and Ken with regards to Piedmont and ignore my rattle

Thanks again everyone.

Any experiences with the '03?

When I had the Cappellano, we also had the G. Conterno, the Monprivato, the Bartolo Mascarello (not the Ca), the Sandrone le Vigne, and the A. Conterno Granbussia, plus afew others. I was very impressed with the Cappellano, but G Conterno and the B. mascarello were also quite impressive. Monprivato was very very good, but I didn’t think it quite held up to the top wines.

Cappellano is out there. I just bought some 04 from Rare Wine (the rupestris).
