1994 Weingut Günther Steinmetz Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Auslese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (1/10/2012)
Pop and pour. Golden yellow. The nose is one of the strongest petrol/kerosene aromatics I’ve found. Some underlying citrus as well. Excellent medium bodied aged Auslese. This enters bright and crisp with tart green apple and a bit of key lime. As this moves through the mid palate, into the finish, it takes on more of a creamy texture with more stone fruit notes. Still showing a strong structural backbone and a long, fresh finish. Singing right now.

Just reading your TN has my taste buds going - sounds like my sort of riesling. ![cheers [cheers.gif]](/uploads/db3686/original/2X/0/0ff9bfcdb0964982cd3240b6159868fbdf215b1a.gif)
Anthony, where did you get this? I bought a single bottle of the 1992 about two years ago along with a 1994 spatlese. The spatlese was too old for my liking and consequently, I didn’t have high hopes for the auslese. I also figured it was going to be bordering on dessert wine territory, so I put it away and forgot about it. I finally cracked it one night at a nice restaurant in Mazatlan with some tequila shrimp and nearly fell out of my seat! Almost totaly dry with a crackling, acidic finish. A perfect pairing for that meal and one of the most enjoyable bottles I have ever had. I have been kicking myself daily for not buying more bottles of that wine. If the 1994 is still on the market, I wanna grab a case or two.
Incidently, My impression of the wine was very similar to yours but there was only a whisper of petrol in the 1992. Intersting that it would be so strong 2 vintages later.
We had a disaster of a tasting group last night where wine after wine was corked, crappy etc, so Paul Zitarelli from Full Pull opened this for everyone at the end (we were only 5 last night, so we all got quite a bit) and we drowned our sorrows. I did see some at retail here in Seattle at Champion wines, so I would imagine it came from the same library batch.
In Portland, maybe Vinopolis would be a good place to start?
I am in seattle now. Thanks for the info, I will give Champion a call.
