TN: 1994 Edmunds St. John Syrah Durell Vineyard (USA, California, Sonoma County)

Opened this last night after a corked 2009 Arnot Roberts Syrah Alder.

More complexity than the last '94 I opened in the spring. Still not the depth of '93 and '95. Slightly pokey acidity, that is a bit obvious. The fruit that remains is tart red, and it just feels a bit lean on the palate. It’s good, but has not near the meaty, earthy Cornas-like depth of the great ESJ Durells.

How cool that you have that to taste!

Thanks, Benjamin.
Steve released a bunch of older stock a couple years ago and I some friends bought a bunch.
They age so well, it’s a joy to check back in in them.

The '95 is my favorite of the Durrells.

If has been a few years since I had one but wasn’t the 1992 also highly regarded? I’ve got a few 1995’s from the late release left and they have been more hit than miss.

It is a great wine. Prob my fave, too.
I’ve had the '91, which is solid, but not '92, Mel.

I noticed 1 of these that I forgot about in my cellar recently. Looks like time to open it up.

Dennis,
I got in on that release - had the 1998 Sangiovese the other night in a large, blind tasting with friends and it was the thunderbird award. Steve’s wines age as well as any do estic wines I’ve tried.
Best, Jim

Nice, Jim! I Have not tried Steve’s Sangiovese.
That’s a treat.
And not surprising it has aged well and was a standout.

Where can I find more of the Rozet vineyard bottling? I have one last year (maybe the 2000 vintage?) that was killer and rekindled my love of ESJ wines.

The 2000 and 2001 Los Robles Viejos were both quite good, I have a slight preference for the latter. Probably hard to find these days.

I did some Wine Searcher-ing - there is 2001 Syrah out there, but none of the Robles Viejos that I could find. I’m down to my last bottle. It will suck when that is gone.

I think I have three of the 2001s, and one 2000. Pat might try emailing Steve Edmunds and see whether he has any in his library he’s will to sell.
