TN: 1993 Phelps Backus Cabernet

This is one of the bottles opened at our party on Sunday, and I’m coming back to the leftovers tonight. It’s a lovely combination of Left Bank earthiness and minerality (iron in particular), with ripe blackberry/currant fruit. Still plenty of midpalate acidity, and some smoky/tobacco notes emerge as it warms up. Drinking very well now and probably will cellar for at least another 3-5 years. A “wow” wine for sure.

I always thought that the 93 was good, but compared to the otherwordly 94 it was just not memorable.

And the '95 you brought last Friday Jack was absolutely a stunner as far as I was concerned. I wish I had both Backus and Eisele going back to the mid-80’s. I would be a happy man.

Thanks Bone. I was thrilled to pour that Mag for you, your lady and friends. As good as the 95 was, you should have tasted the 94. It is in my top five American cabs in my lifetime.

this was good! note to self, post notes on the wine.

Bruce, thanks for the note. Silverman (fellow berserker-lurker) and I had this over thanksgiving and it was truly memorable. We both detected extreme mocha. Lots of life left in the 93.

We loved this wine last night, early contender for WOTY. All you could want from aged Napa Cabernet. While I recall the 91 & 94 Backus also being otherworldly I don’t think I’ll remember them any more fondly than this beauty.

We agree with Bruce that well cared-for this wine has another 5-10 years easy.

Doc…I’ve got a mag of the 91 we need to check in on! [drinkers.gif]

Indeed we do!!!
