TN: 1993 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny

  • 1993 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny (11/18/2014)
Dark rustic cloudy cranberry, rose rim color. Sweet wild red berry fruit, rose petals, orange potpourri, sous bois, slight saddle leather nose. Very much alive and pretty darn youthful in the mouth…dancing citrus acidity, maybe even some tannin? Rustic and pretty…tart strawberry, raspberry, cherry, plum fruit….bright with cherry skin acidity, cranberry orange zest….well rounded with smoothness. Love the dusty earth tones, dried leaves/spices, slight menthol and old leather. Old school stuff here…VERY satisfying village, and another 93 drinking extremely well!! (93 pts.)

already? When did you get it? No sediment needing to settle?

Thanks for the note. I haven’t had any wines from Bertheau yet, and no '93s yet either!

Right off the truck a couple hours ago. Yea, there is tons of sediment…but they must have been sat up nicely the 1.5hr ride over from S.F.! It’s Bertheau….the more cloudy the better!! [cheers.gif]

Pop one of your’s alan when you get them….would like to know your thoughts!

So much for “Bertheau doesn’t age well.”

Exactly what I was thinking. Gives me more confidence to let mine go a while in the cellar.

Holding up on day two. Wife didn’t like it at all…too tart and “old tasting”. [snort.gif]

Were people saying it doesn’t age well in general, or was the concern about the 2008s in particular?

anybody want to buy my 2011 Chambolle premier cru–6 bottles? I am keeping the 1993.

I’ve heard two concerns broadly about Bertheau:
(1) because the wines are so lightweight, there’s no much to age on
(2) they show so ready to drink, are they quick agers?

Bottle two confirms the first! Shows some strength of Bonnes Mares…with a kiss of Amoureuses!

Since I last posted in this thread, I had the pleasure of a 1991 Bertheau Chambolle Les Charmes. Delicious, properly mature, and ready to drink. It was not quite as good as the 1993 Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle Les Charmes we had right next to it, but it was nonetheless pretty darn good and supports the ‘Bertheau can age’ theory.

Was this a concern dating back to the father or a more recent concern after the son took over?

I was under the impression that it was only recently a concern due to the trajectory of the 2008s.

I think its a fallacy that light wines cant not age. 1979 was an extremely light vintage and everything Ive had from that year has been great.

It’s Burgundy…expect the unexpected.

I recently acquired the Chambiolle Premier Cu 1990, and will be opening a bottle in the near future. Now even more curious.

I have a 2006 Les Charmes that was gifted to me recently. Any thoughts of how long to wait on it?

Mark, i have had that wine twice and it was great both times - but it has been at least ten years.

Let’s organize a dinner when next you are in NY, and I’ll include it.

I’m a big fan of Pierre Bertheau and even a bigger fan of Francois’s wines. The downside to older wines is a lot of bottle variation, in my experience, and also some wines seem overcropped. I’m not sure when Francois took over from his father, but sometime in the 1999-2001 period is my best guess. The label changed in 2004 IIRC.
