The wine store up the road just moved premises and they found a stray bottle of this when they were clearing out the old shop. I opened it this evening to accompany a Flannery hanger, salad of cold couscous, chickpeas, tomato, peppers and basil, and delicious corn on the cob.
Opened an hour before serving. A great nose of old leather, a bit of wood smoke and a hint of mushroom. On the palate it was plush initially, with a graceful decline over the course of 90 minutes. More fruit than I would have given it credit for, a really pleasant surprise given the vintage. Sometimes its these lower expectation wines that give the most pleasure.
It was a tremendous match with the food. Notwithstanding the fact that the propane tank ran out and I had to replace it mid-grilling, the steak was fantastic. A good night’s eating and drinking in the porch as the rain fell outside.
Cheers
Peter
