Deliciously pure, clean and earthy. There is a core of sweet vinous fruit that intensifies with air. It is rocky, detailed and beautifully proportioned. The finish is fine and savoury.
never heard of vineyard or producer. Tell me more.
Nor have I. I cant tell you anything more other than the wine was utterly delicious.
Formantaux does not seem to be in Volnay’s list of Climats et Lieux-dits.
I can’t find any reference to it either Nowell. I have checked Coates and Morris’ books.
Hmm…strictly in the hypothetical world, is there a thread on delicious counterfeits?
Is there a movie script waiting to be written about a gifted, yet downtrodden, winemaker sold into captivity in Haut Cotes de Beaune turning out amazing wines from non-descript parcels. Those wines being unscrupulously sold as higher quality Cru wines to an unsuspecting enthusiast by a nefarious cellar master. After years of drinking wonderful wines, the enthusiast gives a bottle to a friend with a penchant for posting tasting notes to an online forum of suave and dashing wine savvy peeps, who quickly realize his latest note is from a vineyard that does not exist. The enthusiast goes on a quest to find the source of the wine and after many trials, and interference from said nefarious cellar master finally meets and frees the gifted winemaker. The enthusiast knows they can never be safe in Burgundy while the nefarious(great word) cm is alive. So he spirits him to Northern California, deep into the hills where the enthusiast had a small family farm. They plant a small vineyard and the gifted winemaker begins to work magic with the grapes. As the enthusiast is tasting the first finished wine wondering what they will name it, he looks at the winemaker. It suddenly dawns on him that he does not even know the winemakers true name. He asks him, “Do you remember your family?” “Yes”, says the winemaker. “What did they call you?”, asks the enthusiast. The winemaker pauses a moment, then whispers, “Rhys”…
Google shows a Henri de Boileau, variety of wines made by this producer, can’t figure out if a negociant or what, didn’t see Formantaux . . .
Here’s a pic.
This looks to be a “brand” name - not a lieu-dit !
Henri de Boileau is certainly a negociant (elevé et mis en bouteille par) in 71570 Saint-Symphorien D’Ancelles (Beaujolais).
However never heard of it …
