TN: 1991 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga Cuvée (USA, California, Napa Valley)

  • 1991 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga Cuvée - USA, California, Napa Valley (7/24/2009)
The debut Vintage for the Calistoga Cuvee…and what a Vintage to start with! I don’t know why Bo says this wine will be best only at 1 to 3 years of release??? 18years later…it’s still ROCKIN! Beautiful Bordeaux-like garnet in color…dusty plum, cassis, leather, aged anise nose. This truly shows how GREAT the 1991 Calif. Cab Vintage really was. This wine was meant for early consumption, while you wait for the Estate. If you said this WAS the Estate…I’d be happy! Silky smooth aged cab flavors…dusty cedar, dried cherry, cassis, anise, old leather, some sweet wintergreen tobacco. Not the most complex and intensely flavored of wines…is a little bit “light”…but for the age, it has held together quite well. Glad to have a bunch more to follow… (92 pts.)

Nice note, Buzz. I would love to try one of these. I think the Estate is still 20 years from its peak.

Another bottle tonight…another winner. Maybe a little more plum skin sour to this one, but the flavors are as the last one. Would love to pair this next to the Estate!

gimme some, i want to try this!

I knew these could age, but that’s impressive. I usually buy this yearly and drink with 5 years on them up to ten. The 99 was just great.

3 more bottles left Glenn…would pair well with some older Monte B!

92 points almost sounds like an off bottle for this one. Nice wine Buzz.

Buzz,

Thanks for the note, I love those older CA Cabs, and 1991 is a vintage that just won’t quit.
Cheers! [cheers.gif]
