Those of you who grabbed a few from Envoyer’s recent ex-cellar sale on these should be happy. I didn’t, but a local fellow drinker did and shared this the other night.
Nice little wine.
1991 Albert Morot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Bataillère Aux Vergelesses (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru)
Nose is dusty, wet earth, forest floorish. I like it, might not be for everyone, but it’s aged pinot to me. Palate shows lovely red fruit and just a whisper of acidity. Tart cherry notes. Structural very round and pleasant on the palate. Not especially deep or profound, but very pretty and drinking well. Wish I had more.
One of my highlights from Jan 00’ was visiting this estate and seeing their reservers (many, many vintages), covered with mold. Not the most profound wines but really well put together and fun to drink, thanks for the notes.
Dennis…your guys are lucky ( for living in USA ) .
My oldest A. Morot is from 1996 and it is my last bottle. SAQ seldom carries old red Burg and if they do…they charge us accordingly ( which means too pricey for me to buy them ).
I cracked one of these a couple weeks ago, and it is a nice bottle that tends toward the more lean aromatic side of things. It actually needed an hour or so with air to open a bit, and was a nice drink although not a great wine. For the price very good QPR. I am happy with it and will enjoy the rest over the next 1-5 years I would think, but no danger of this dying anytime soon. Not a showoff wine to bring to dinners, but a really nice one for the table.
Thanks, Dennis. Funny, you read (I think in Coates) that Batillere is supposed to be the best parcel of Vergelesses, but Bize’s Vergelesses is generally esteemed a better wine than Morot’s.
Dennis–nice note. I had my first in November and posted a note here with a pretty similar take to yours. The wine does need a bit of air as it comes out of the chute a little underwhelming, but blossoms nicely in 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour. There’s a fair amount of oak that comes across as a soy, almost maple sugar like note, but isn’t enough to seriously detract. Overall a minor wine, but quite enjoyable, and a great opportunity for those without extensive cellars to get aged burgundy for a relative song.
I would be happy to open one next time we drink Beaune/SLB wines if you would like. Just say the word. I think you will like this wine, but I am not sure everyone would be a huge fan. i suppose there is only one way to find out though.
